Golden (50th) Wedding Anniversary

The home of Duane & Cheri Rhynard of Yorba Linda, California was the location of the August 7th Golden Wedding Anniversary celebration of Loren & Ruth Rhynard of Fullerton, California. They were married on August 8th, the same date as Ruth's maternal grandmother.

The party was a gift from their children and grandchildren, Dale & Cheryl Wellcome, Amanda & Wesley of Union City, CA; Duane & Cheri Rhynard, Tim & Teresa; and Bob & Katy Rhynard, Samantha of Sunnyvale, CA.

The approximately seventy people enjoyed a tasty buffet luncheon in the comfortable backyard setting.  Guests included six of the eleven original wedding party members and the minister who conducted the ceremony.  Family was present from Arizona and Colorado.  Also attending were two classmates of Ruth's from Anaheim High School (CA) and an Elsie High School (MI) classmate of Loren's.

Ruth wore a golden tiara, which had been imported from Germany for her maternal grandmother on the occasion of her 50th wedding anniversary celebration on August 8, 1929.  Cheryl also wore the tiara at her wedding.  There was on display a golden vase which had been used in the golden wedding anniversary celebration of the grandfather of a dear ninety-six year old friend.

Cheryl and daughter Amanda shared their musical talents on viola, recorder and piccolo to an appreciative audience.

LOREN & THE FRIED CALAMARI

By Don Rhynard

I will recall for the guests an incident that occurred a few years back to illustrate how easy Loren is to get along with and helps explain why Loren and Ruth's marriage has lasted for 50 years and hopefully will last for many more.

A few years ago Loren and Ruth visited us in Virginia and Joy served fried calamari.  Loren had never had it before and liked it very much.  So, when Joy and I visited Loren and Ruth in 1999 (I think).  Loren asked Joy if she would make some fried calamari which, of course, Joy agreed to.  We stopped by the store, picked up fresh calamari and took it home.

Joy and Ruth went into the kitchen to prepare the calamari, while Loren and I retired to the living room to talk.  Things followed something like this:

Ruth called in from the kitchen that she didn't think there was going to be enough oil to fry the calamari.  Loren and I continued to talk in the living room.

Some time later Ruth called from the kitchen, saying, "Loren, we don't have enough oil to fry the calamari."  Loren and I continued to talk in the living room.

A few minutes passed and Ruth called in "We really do need more oil to fry the calamari."  Loren continued to talk.  After a few more minutes I asked Loren if he wasn't going to the store to buy the oil so the women could prepare the meal.  Loren replied that Ruth said she wanted some oil, but had not actually asked him to go and buy some.

A few minutes passed and I went into the kitchen and told Ruth that if she wanted some oil she needed to specifically ask Loren to go to the store and buy her some.  I went back to the living room.

Ruth called from the kitchen, "Loren, will you please go to the store and buy some oil so we can fry the calamari."  Loren continued to talk.  After a couple of minutes, I asked Loren if he wasn't going to go to the store to buy some oil.  He replied "Ruth hasn't told me what kind of oil she wants."

I went into the kitchen and told Ruth that she's not going to get any oil unless she asks Loren to go to the store and buy a specific kind of oil.

In the living room, Loren continued to talk.  Ruth calls in from the kitchen, "Loren will you please go to the store and buy us some canola oil?"

Loren continued to talk.  I asked him why he wasn't going to the store.  His reply was, "Well, she hasn't told me how much oil she wants."

I went back into the kitchen and told Ruth that she wasn't going to get any oil unless she told Loren to go to the store and buy her some oil and specify what kind AND how much.  I went back to the living room to listen while Loren talked.

Ruth called in from the kitchen "Loren, please go to the store and buy me a quart of Canola oil."  Loren replied to me, "I guess we should go to the store and buy the women some oil."

Through ALL of this, Ruth never raised her voice; never lost her patience.  That must be how to stay married to Loren for 50 YEARS!!!

HAPPY, HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO LOREN AND RUTH RHYNARD!!!
